Carmina Burana is a scenic cantata composed in 1935 and 1936 by Carl Orff, based on 24 poems from the medieval collection Carmina Burana. Its full Latin title is Carmina Burana: Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris cantandae comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis ("Songs of Beuern: Secular songs for singers and choruses to be sung together with instruments and magical images"). It was first performed in Frankfurt on 8 June 1937.
Carmina Burana is the third solo album by Ray Manzarek released in 1983. It is a recording of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. Cover art features photo-montage of illustrations by Hieronymus Bosch (spelled on original release as Hieronymus Beach) and Jan van Eyck (Arnolfini Portrait) and modern items like guitar, drums, reel-to-reel and keyboards. Fritz Mahler (related to Gustav Mahler) conducts here a very clear and heartfelt reading of Orffs Carmina Burana. Little faults of the ensemble (german pronunciation . x) don't lessen the high quality of this fine record (original monaural, but fine recorded). This one from 1957 and a 1968 stereo recording with the Berlin Opera and Eugen Jochum for Deutsche Grammophon. Thanks to high powered soloists Gundula Janowitz and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, that recording takes top honors but this one is a not too shabby second.
