Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) wrote two sets of impromptus - short improvisatory-like pieces for the piano - in the final year of his short life. The two collections, Opus 90, D. 899, and the ed Opus 142, D. 935, each include four compositions. Some listeners consider the latter set as an integrated whole, virtually like a sonata. Schubert composed the impromptus to be within the range of amateur pianists and to be played in the home. I have studied several of them over the years on the piano.

Dating from June 1950, Artur Schnabel’s Schubert Impromptus were the great pianist’s final recordings. They make a bracing, vital impact in what appears to be their brightest and most detailed compact disc transfers to date. The D. 899 set begins on an inspired level, as Schnabel imbues the first piece with forward moving urgency and no backing off from Schubert’s intense harmonic clashes. While Schnabel smudges some of No. 2’s fleeting passagework and pushes the central minor section a bit too insistently for comfort, he still conveys the music’s improvisatory impulses better than most.
