Winchester Cathedral" is a song by The New Vaudeville Band, a British novelty group established by the song's composer, Geoff Stephens, and was released in late 1966 by Fontana Records. It reached in Canada on the RPM 100 national singles charts and shortly thereafter in the . on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The New Vaudeville Band was a group created by songwriter Geoff Stephens in 1966 to record his novelty composition "Winchester Cathedral", a song inspired by the dance bands of the 1920s and a Rudy Vallee megaphone-style vocal. To his surprise, the song became a transatlantic hit that autumn, reaching the Top 10 in the United Kingdom and rising to in the United States. The record sold over three million copies worldwide, earning the RIAA certification of gold disc status

Although limited in range and at times far too obvious, at their best the New Vaudeville Band delivered a whimsical, sometimes clever take on original and imitation tunes of the 1920s and 1930s. Their hits are here (including the title track, its witty clone "Finchley Central," and the catchy "Peek-a-Boo," along with some of the better album tracks) - as well as some real clunkers.

The New Vaudeville Band is the creation of the British songwriter and record producer Geoff Stephens, who arranged this to sound like Rudy Vallee's vaudeville hits in the 1930s. Stephens sang it through a megaphone to help create the sound. The song became a surprise novelty hit - Stephens' only chart entry in the US, but one of four to crack the UK Top 40. Winchester Cathedral is in Hampshire, England, and is one of the largest cathedrals in the world . See the next post below}.
