Blank Generation is the debut studio album by American punk rock band Richard Hell and the Voidoids. It was produced by Richard Gottehrer and released in September 1977 on Sire Records. Kentucky-born Richard Meyers moved to New York City after dropping out of high school in 1966 aspiring to become a poet. He and his best friend from high school, Tom Miller, founded the rock band the Neon Boys, which became Television in 1973.

About Blank Generation. The music of Richard Hell and the Voidoids is an important example of proto-punk, the retrospectively named precursor to the punk rock movement which began in the mid-1970s. Heavily influenced by Bob McFadden’s 1959 track The Beat Generation, this song was written by Richard Hell and originally recorded in 1975 with his earlier band, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers. However, the most well-known version of the song is the one rerecorded for the Voidoids' debut album, also called Blank Generation.

I belong to the blank generation and I can take it or leave it each time I belong to the generation but I can take it or leave it each time. Triangles were fallin at the window as the doctor cursed He was a cartoon long forsaken by the public eye The nurse adjusted her garters as I breathed my first The doctor grabbed my throat and yelled: "God's consolation prize!" I belong to the blank generation and I can take it or leave it each time I belong to the generation but I can take it or leave it each time.

After Hell split with the Heartbreakers, he embarked on a solo career, enlisting Julian, Robert Quine and Marc Bell to serve as his backing band, the Voidoids. Richard Hell and the Voidoids would only release one more studio album after Blank Generation, 1982’s Destiny Street. In 1984, Hell retired from music and has spent the past several decades working as an author. He’s penned two novels and several nonfiction books, including an acclaimed memoir, I Dreamed I Was a Very Clean Tramp. Disc 1 – Original Album.

Richard Hell was one of the first men on the scene when punk rock first began to emerge in New York City as an early member of both Television and the Heartbreakers (he left both groups before they could record). But his own version of punk wasn't much like anyone else's, and while Hell's debut album, Blank Generation, remains one of the most powerful to come from punk's first wave, those anticipating a Ramones/Dead Boys-style frontal assault from this set had better readjust their expectations.
