David Fanshawe: African Sanctus. David Fanshawe: African Sanctus. In a spirit of ecumenism and multi-culturalism, composer and ethnomusicologist David Fanshawe united his recordings of African tribal music with his own setting of the Latin mass to produce African Sanctus in 1972. In 1969, Fanshawe traveled from the Nile delta to Lake Victoria, and from western Sudan to the Red Sea, and recorded the various kinds of sacred music he encountered along his symbolically cross-shaped journey. By adding parts for a solo soprano, choir, and western instruments, including a small rock ensemble, Fanshawe draws the diverse styles together in a coherent structure

David Arthur Fanshawe (19 April 1942 – 5 July 2010) was an English composer and self-styled explorer with a fervent interest in world music. His best-known composition is the 1972 choral work African Sanctus. Fanshawe was born in Paignton in Devon in 1942. His father was an officer in the Royal Artillery who played a central role in the planning of D-Day. His father's stories of military service in India fired Fanshawe's enthusiasm for travel and adventure.

David Fanshawe's AFRICAN SANCTUS is a unique composition in the choral repertoire, a crossover work that mixes media - voice, instrument, and audio tape - as it mixes styles, cultures and traditions. AFRICAN SANCTUS was born out of a personal odyssey that Fanshawe undertook, beginning in 1969.
