There is some distortion at the beginning of many of the works that seems to disappear or become inconsequential in the face of the quality of the performances with so many moments illuminating things I'd not noticed before. The sound is good for historical recordings and never really bothers me that much.

This disc is issued to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Beinum's death, which occurred at his podium during a rehearsal with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra on April 13, 1959

Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by Joseph Joachim. Since then it has become one of the best-known violin concertos. Beethoven had previously written a number of pieces for violin and orchestra.
