Michael Mayer - Mantasy Those hoping for a romping new hi-NRG direction from Michael Mayer will be disappointed. Mantasy may sound like a '70s New York gay bar but it actually refers, explains Mayer, to his fascination with history's great madcap explorers: "Characters obsessed with an idea, to totally wrong conceptions of the world and faulty sea charts, to inconceivable exertions, all that lunacy. Does Mayer see himself as a fellow-traveller, sonically? A producer following his own Mantasy? Perhaps. And with some validity. Over a rockabilly rhythm, the giddy "Rudi was a Punk" reuses the dramatic, Morricone-esque xylophones that were a hallmark of the Supermayer album, and makes full jolly play of the relentless, almost cheesy brass that has latterly become a feature of the Kompakt sound. That such motifs aren't new barely matters.

As a DJ, producer and remixer, Michael Mayer remains one of Germany's core celebrities in dance music. It's no secret that he spends his weekends traveling around the globe. It's likely throughout his career he's played in front of millions.

When someone like Michael Mayer comes out with an album so ordinary, it has to be disappointing. Kompakt has been releasing melodic house for years but as the head honcho of said label, Mayer should be trying harder to push his sound into new directions. There's something awfully forgettable and transitory about melodic house which adversely affects its replayability. MANTASY is comparable to Four Tet's PINK (2012) and Daphni's JIAOLONG (2012) in style, and all three left me indifferent. The issue with MANTASY is that this feeling is spread thin, reducing its emotional impact. Moreover, where is the "jacking" or funk element in this album? House music lives and dies by this aspect. The melodic hooks are vibrant and well-constructed, but the bassline and drum track, whereby the funk is manufactured, doesn't get the job done.

Mantasy, made during the course of seven months, is more unified and reflects the Kompakt leader's infatuation with a broad range of film music. After the twinkling melancholia of "Sully," the album makes like the early portion of a Mayer DJ set, with alternately clumpy and jumpy rhythms - inhibited yet somewhat cartoonish - fostering a sense of anticipation. Mantasy" itself, stern and chugging yet spacious, comes off like a Moroder-ik version of his 2003 single "Privat

There are some outstanding tracks on all three albums but the overall effect is remarkably weak. Cheesy, upbeat house is acceptable, but I favor darker, deeper music. I think the Flying Lotus describes the matter best: "You figure out what the feeling is, and if it's one of those good feelings, you don't want it to last too long. It's like an orgasm, man - if it lasted forever, it wouldn't be awesome."The issue with MANTASY is that this feeling is spread thin, reducing its emotional impact. Moreover, where is the "jacking" or funk element in this album? House music lives and dies by this aspect. The melodic hooks are vibrant and well-constructed, but the bassline and drum track, whereby the funk is manufactured, doesn't get the job done. It pales in comparison to Hercules & Love Affair's DJ Kicks, which unashamedly lays on those cheesy melodies, but also brings the funky grooves to back it up.
