Listen free to Elliott Smith – Figure 8 (Son Of Sam, Somebody That I Used To Know and more). Figure 8 is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. Released by DreamWorks Records on April 18, 2000, it became Smith's second release on a major label and the last album he would complete before his death.

You might think these considerations would bring a modicum of contentment to Elliott Smith on his fifth solo album, Figure 8. But you’d be underestimating the exquisite purity and commitment behind his perpetual bummer. No mere improvement in personal fortunes will change Smith’s bargain with listeners: to provide ruthless, sad-eyed insight swathed in melodies that the Beatles would not disown. Figure 8, produced by Smith with Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf (Foo Fighters, Beck), sequesters Smith with handmade sounds that last appeared no more recently than the 1960s. There’s another big crescendo in the album’s grand finale, Can’t Make a Sound, an anthem of isolation in which Smith wonders, Why should you want any other when you’re a world within a world? He finds no peace in his solitude, but he’s convinced that anything else might be worse. In This Article: Elliott Smith.

Judging only by his earlier, bare-bones indie-label albums, it seemed highly unlikely that Elliott Smith would turn into the ambitious arranger and studio craftsman of his lushly textured Dreamworks debut, XO. A big part of that shift, of course, was the fact that Smith had major-label finances and equipment to work with for the first time; this allowed him to fuse his melancholy, slightly punky folk with the rich sonics of pop artists like the Beatles and Beach Boys.

in my opinion, Elliott's best album. the first listen is nice but almost forgettable, but as great music does, Figure 8 just keeps getting better. 2 of 2 users found this helpful. I've had this album for over a year now and I've been listening to it constantly since. This album was my first E. Smith album and it encouraged me to get all his other stuff. I can listen to this whole album and not want to skip a single song. Do yourself a favor and GET THIS ALBUM. xpand. 0 of 0 users found this helpful.

Noisy as hell. I wonder if all the ones Bong Load mysteriously had back up for sale after being unavailable for a while were ones people sent back.
Vivados
My copy was pretty noisey, anyone else have this issue?

I just returned the Geffen pressing i got the other day, it was terrible, straight up dirty paper shards all over both of the Lps ( i cleaned the Lps b4 playing them) and all the way thru there was a ton of audible distortion/fuzziness, what a shame, should have ordered the Bongload version instead..YMMV but i'd def avoid this. I had a similar exp with the 4MWB pressing of Anne Briggs first LP, same crappy distortion over the whole LP.

I've owned two other versions - the red and blue plain edition and the back to black repress - and this is easily best of the three, despite the slight surface noise. Also the artwork is loads sharper - I guess all reissues have relied on scans of the original up to now, but the difference is night and day - compare the back covers. You can't even tell Elliott's wearing an earring on the plain and geffen reissues!

i compared as well with the UK 2LP and the images on the jacket are significantly clearer. I would differ with you in the sound category. Sonically, i feel they sound fairly similar with a slight edge to the double LP. Maybe just because they didn't cram all those grooves on one record...who knows. Plus the surface noise is a bit louder than I prefer but I'm sure I will go through a few of these until I am happy lol.
Mori
This sounds great! A tad noisy at parts, but overall for a colored 1LP for an album this long, it sounds pretty awesome.
Mave
Agreed! I had to send my copy back to BongLoad (mine was pressed pretty off center and the whole LP had a warble) They replaced my XO as well (bad fill errors side one). They were super cool about it, claiming the marble wax cools at different rates causing more fill errors than expected..
Quendant
My copy is just a single LP, not a double. I don't think they offered a double.
Fearlessdweller
Sounds great. Best master of this record i've heard. I also have the Back to Black re-issue double LP and the orig Bongload double and this kills both..
Vikus
Only available as a single LP. Any comments on the sound?

Same here. There was not a double LP of this version as far as I have been able to tell.
