12 Golden Country Greats is Ween's fifth album, and third on Elektra Records. This album marked the first time Ween limited themselves to a specific genre of music. According to producer and friend of the band Ben Vaughn, Ween asked him to produce the album as he had already been working with musicians on the Nashville country scene, having produced Arthur Alexander's Lonely Just Like Me album and co-written songs with Rodney Crowell and Gary Nicholson.

Ween - 12 Golden Country Greats (1996).

Piss Up a Rope" was also released as a 7-inch single on Diesel Only Records, featuring another non-album track recorded during the 12 Golden Country Greats sessions – "Sweet Texas Fire". Dean Ween – Vocals, Guitar on "I Don't Want to Leave You on the Farm".

Ween’s 12 Golden Country Greats came out at the height of the so-called alt-country movement, consisting mostly of young bands applying vintage country-music accouterments to what were essentially roots-rock songs in the vein of Bruce Springsteen. Some regarded the movement as a subversion of the country genre, so in grand Ween fashion, 12 Golden Country Greats subverted the subversion. Reverential without being duplicative, Ween’s album isn't at all sarcastic. Label: Elektra Records. Before dismissing this album as an endeavor to ridicule country music, please consider the fact that this was recorded in Nashville with such studio luminary legends as Buddy Spicher, the Jordanaires, Russ Hicks, Charlie McCoy and Hargus "Pig" Robbins. OK, now feel free to split your side laughing at songs like "Piss Up a Rope," "Japanese Cowboy" and all the rest.

The main problem with 12 Golden Country Greats (which only contains ten songs, by the way) is that it's Ween's first album to concentrate on a single music genre and such concentration lends the impression that they consider themselves above the genre. But that isn't entirely the case. Ween recorded 12 Golden Country Greats in Nashville with numerous legendary musicians, including the Jordanaires, Buddy Spicher, Charlie McCoy, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, and Russ Hicks
