Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story is a musical in two acts written by Alan Janes, and featuring the music of Buddy Holly. It opened at London's Victoria Palace Theatre on 12 October 1989. An early example of the jukebox musical, Buddy ran in London's West End for over 12 years, playing 5,140 performances. It was first released on the posthumous album The Buddy Holly Story, Vol. 2 (Coral 57326/757326), in March 1960. The song was a hit in Britain in 1960, reaching number 25 on the pop singles chart. In an 1988 re-release of the recording by MCA, the single reached no. 65 on the UK singles chart in a 5 week chart run. In the extended version of the song, in the first ten seconds Holly can be heard preparing to sing. The audio starts with audio saying "Yeah, we're rolling

The first Buddy Holly Story LP, released weeks after his death in February 1959, brought together all of his and The Crickets' hits and was a strong seller. The inevitable second volume is more bits and pieces, gathering up some Holly evergreens that were never hits for him, notably "Well. All Right," as well as unfinished and previously unissued recordings such as "Peggy Sue Got Married.
The unprecedented success of The Buddy Holly Story, released in the immediate aftermath of the singer's death in a plane crash in 1959 soon had executives at Coral scouring for other material they could put out for the public. The album, whilst not hitting the heights of its predecessor, still made the Top Ten during its chart run and further enhanced Holly's reputation. Disc: 1. 1. Peggy Sue Got Married.
