In celebration of Black History Month, join the OSU Jazz Ensemble as they present Basically Basie, paying tribute to the African American composer, pianist and band leader, "The Count of Swing, William Count Basie. Guest vocalist Laura Camara will sing selections from Ella & Basie. Other selections for this performance will include compositions written by Count Basie, members of his legendary orchestra, and the many world-class including Neal Hefti, Sammy Nestico, Quincy Jones and Benny Carter-who worked with the ensemble over its long performance history

In 2012, SDSU Jazz Ensemble I performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Many world-class musicians have performed with the ensembles through the years, including: Gary Burton, Louis Bellson, Dizzy Gillespie, Carl "Doc" Severinsen, Dick Oatts, Dana Landry, Paul McKee, Jim White, Phil Wilson, Clayton Cameron, Bobby Shew, and Gary Foster. The SDSU jazz program hosts instrumental and vocal ensembles throughout the region during the annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival
The Kent State University Jazz Studies Program fosters a Real World atmosphere, promoting the development of fundamental skills in jazz. Through our jazz curriculum and ensemble performance, students are provided the opportunity to improve individual musicianship, create a personal voice, learn from and be inspired by the rich history, and understand the evolutionary process and modern trends of jazz. They become musical leaders and positive contributors to the Kent State University experience.
