As the title indicates, many of the routines here originate from Robert Klein's experiences growing up in New York in the 1950s. He's equally comfortable, however, taking on then-current targets like stoned FM disc jockeys and inane television commercials, or whimsically making fun of late-19th century president James Garfield.
Robert Klein is the most underrated and under-publicized comedian that I know o. in Maryland, and his hilarious and well-sung songs, such as "Fabulous 50s" and the perceptive "Middle Class Educated Blues". This guy is as perceptive, and maybe even MORE so, than George Carlin. Klein subbed for Johnny on The Tonight Show numerous times (Johnny chose the people who substituted for him), he had many, many HBO specials, yet he somehow fell through the cracks. I am currently reading Bob Klein's autobiography the Amorous Busboy of Decatur Avenue: A Child of the Fifties Looks Back (ABB) during the course of which I decided to pick up this CD. The Child CD brings back memories of ng Civil Defense drills of the 1950's and other not-quite-Kodak moments of our lives. The 20 years after book, like the man, is a more developed and seasoned fruition.
