Respect" is a song written and originally released by American recording artist Otis Redding in 1965. The song became a 1967 hit and signature song for soul singer Aretha Franklin. The music in the two versions is significantly different, and through a few changes in the lyrics, the stories told by the songs have a different flavor. Redding's version is a plea from a desperate man, who will give his woman anything she wants.
Never Grow Old" was reissued by Checker Records in 1957, 1968 and 1973. Precious Lord (Part 1)" was reissued by Checker Records in 1960 and 1969. The following singles were released or re-released after Franklin left Columbia.

Aretha Franklin sings this song in the movie Blues Brothers 2000. She also appeared in the original Blues Brothers movie, performing "Think. Sax player Charlie Chalmers played in the horn section alongside King Curtis and Willie Bridges. Then I bought about all the rest of her hits over the decades. Yep, in "Respect" I do recall the phrases "whip it to me" and "sock it to me" making the older folks turn red or blush.
Aretha Franklin is one of the most honored artists in Grammy Award history, winning her 18th honor in 2008. Aretha Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1942. A gifted singer and pianist, Franklin toured with her father's traveling revival show and later visited New York, where she signed with Columbia Records. Franklin went on to release several popular singles, many of which are now considered classics. In 1967, the album I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You) was released, and the first song on the album, "Respect" - an empowered cover of an Otis Redding track - reached No. 1 on both the R&B and pop charts and won Aretha her first two Grammy Awards. She also had Top 10 hits with "Baby I Love You,'' "Think," "Chain of Fools,'' "I Say a Little Prayer," "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.
