The Aerosol Grey Machine is the debut studio album by English progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. It was released in 1969 by record label Mercury. The album was originally intended as a solo album by the band's lead singer and main songwriter, Peter Hammill. When the band signed with Charisma Records, a deal was worked out whereby The Aerosol Grey Machine would be released under the Van der Graaf Generator name, in return for Mercury Records releasing Hammill from his earlier contract with it.
THE AEROSOL GREY MACHINE sessions began life as an intended solo album for Peter Hammill, featuring Banton, Evans and Ellis as session players. This deluxe set celebrates the 50th anniversary of the very first VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR release and features the re-mastered album, an additional CD of rare & previously unreleased tracks including two previously unreleased demos from 1967, the complete BBC Radio Top Gear session from 1968 (including the lost previously unreleased version of ‘Octopus’) & the single tracks ‘People You Were Going To’.
We made "The Aerosol Grey Machine". And it was in the Trident Studios because I liked Ken Scott, who had worked as a sound technician on "A Salty Dog" of Procul Harum. But Scott was working only with the biggest producers, so they gave me Robin Cable who was even better, and in fact he recorded all Elton John's albums". In fact, the quintet first published in 1969 with "People You Were Going To" a single, in which, from today's point of view, especially the B-side "Firebrand", a weird duet Hammill with the then co-founder Chris Judge Smith, points out where the band could have moved, it would not have been resolved immediately.

Van Der Graaf Generator-Aerosol Grey Machine 50Th Ann CD NE. There is nonetheless a quaint allure to Aerosol Grey Machine, and I dare say that it come close to competing with the 2005 reunion album Present (to go right to the opposite end of the scale) for my favourite VDGG album outside of the big four that followed this. Personally, I always get a real kick out of imaging a stoner hippie audience confronted by a switched on Van Der Graaf Generator!.

Beginning as a Peter Hammill solo effort following the dissolution of the first Van Der Graaf Generator, this quickly recorded album brought Hammill together with producer John Anthony and caused the reformation of the band (which immediately thereafter shifted personnel once again). A raw, energetic effort that sometimes did little to show off the young Hammill's talents, the album nevertheless has some fine moments that hint at the possibilities for future releases. The fact remains, mind you, that the second album, The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other, is far superior.
It was released in September 1969. The Aerosol Grey Machine is the first album by the British progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. It was released in September 1969.
