Witthüser & Westrupp was a German singer-songwriter duo consisting of Bernd Witthüser (29 April 1944 – 4 August 2017), guitar, mandolin and Walter Westrupp (born 12 February 1946) guitar, ukulele, trombone, harmonium, psalter and many other instruments. The band was formed in June 1969 as "W&W's pop cabaret", singing German texts in a special way. In 1970 the name changed to "Witthüser & Westrupp". The band was active until 1973. They produced four studio LPs, a live Double-LP, and 4 singles . Lieder von Vampiren, Nonnen und Toten (1970) (listed as a Berndt Witthüser solo album, although both Witthüser and Westrupp play). It is about "new German folk music" of timeless beauty. The instrumentation is very economical, mostly acoustic guitar, supported by either xylophone, trombone or drum and two-part vocals. The lyrics, written by Novalis, Heine, Baltus Brösel, Thomas Rother or from Witthüser's own pen, are romantic, intelligent, humorous and sometimes macabre. Album descriptions on Last.
Bernd Witthüser refused to be received as a political folk-singer for the working class. From 1964 up to 1969 the folk-festival at Burg Waldeck (in the Hunsrück mountains) played an important role for the development of a musical underground in post-WW-II-Germany. It’s quite difficult to write about the music on Lieder von Vampiren, Nonnen und Toten without thinking of the lyrics all the time.
