Almost every record Mark Kozelek has ever released, with his bands Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon and under his own name, has a monochromatic album cover. Black & white, sepia, a hint of red or blue- the visual aesthetic of his records has been remarkably consistent. Lost Verses Live is a long album gathering recordings from shows played in Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and San Francisco, alone with his guitar, and sometimes joined by second acoustic guitarist (and former Red House Painter) Phil Carney. It's very similar in feel to last year's comparably sparse live mini-album 7 Songs Belfast, and its basic sonic uniformity and beauty means it plays almost like an ambient recording.

Mark Edward Kozelek (born January 24, 1967) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer and occasional actor. He is best known as the vocalist and primary recording artist of the indie folk act Sun Kil Moon, with whom he has recorded ten studio albums, and as the vocalist, guitarist and founding member of the indie rock band Red House Painters, with whom he recorded six studio albums from 1989 until 2001. In 2016, Kozelek released a collaborative studio album with Jesu, titled Jesu/Sun Kil Moon. LOST VERSES LIVE is one of two live albums released in the spring of 2009 by Sun Kil Moon/former Red House Painters main man Mark Kozelek. In this characteristically all-acoustic collection, Kozelek mostly tackles material from his Sun Kill Moon repertoire, but also tosses in covers of two Modest Mouse songs and Steven Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns," closing things.

20 years into his career, Mark Kozelek might just be one of the best songwriters in America; he’s certainly one of the most consistent. Eight of April’s 11 songs can be found on the 14-track Lost Verses Live, the first wide-release live album Kozelek has put out in quite a while. Although it’s been assembled from seven different live shows, this album does feel like a good representation of what you’re likely to get at one of Kozelek’s concerts these days.
