Lōc-ed After Dark is the debut studio album by American rapper Tone Lōc. It was released by Delicious Vinyl on January 23, 1989. It reached number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. It was certified Double Platinum by the RIAA. It featured three singles: "Wild Thing", "Funky Cold Medina", and "I Got It Goin' On". The album cover is based on Donald Byrd's 1963 album, A New Perspective.

Lōc'ed After Dark Lyrics. Allow me to display if I may I'm ready to start (So am I) Well, OK I've been held back for several years I had a few squabbles, never shedded no tears But like an uzi on the mic they call me Tone Capone Slayin' down with your posse if you're standin' alone Cultivatin' all cities and tearin'. Doin' it after dark Doin' it at the park Oh yeah, Loc gets hard Oh yeah, that funk gets hard. Freaks never cease, just to say the least I'll start mobbin' motherfuckers like a savage beast I'm takin' my turn to make the mic burn And when I'm teachin' class, there's a lesson to be learned Now I battle posses and tribes alike Never battle out of hate; I always battle for spite Cold jealous of me

If the news of Tone Lōc's hit debut album Lōc-ed After Dark turning 30 this past Wednesday (Jan. 23) is a shocker to you, consider how off-guard it caught the Los Angeles rapper/actor when he was informed of the anniversary on that very day. "My oldest son hit me up with a text this morning," he tells Billboard. And it said, 'It's been 30 years since your album was released, Pops. Lōc-ed After Dark yielded two massive hits in "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina," both of which very much were unavoidable on MTV and top 40 radio in 1989 (they peaked at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100), as Lōc further demolished the barrier between hip-hop and the mainstream while the '80s drew to a close. And for the new dad, that good fortune couldn't have arrived at a better time. I had taken custody of my first son right after the album had come out," the now father of six explains.

A forgotten man in the rise of West Coast rap, Tone-Loc was effectively cut off from his hometown scene in Los Angeles by his unexpected pop success. Paced by the singles "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina" - both co-written by a pre-fame Young MC - and some of the earliest productions by the legendary Dust Brothers, Loc's debut album, Loc-ed After Dark, became the second rap album to top the pop charts, following the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill.

Lōc-ed After Dark (1989). Album by Tone Loc. Wild Thing.

After Lōc-ed After Dark was certified double platinum by RIAA, the Delicious Vinyl artist followed up with a second (and final) album in 1991, Cool Hand Lōc. Now a voice actor for the most part, fans can hear Tone’s distinct pipes as the voice behind various cartoon characters and movie theme songs like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, but true hip-hop heads will always remember him as the Cali lyricist with a smooth style and pioneering sound.
