From the outset he showed a passion for blues and at 17 formed his first trio, which enjoyed success in renowned Rome night-life venues such as Big Mama. He took part in the Italian blues festival and played together with the legendary Louisiana Red. His horizons gradually broadened and he became the supporter for American bluesmen passing through Italy (Paul Jones, Buddy Miles, Billy Preston). In 1990 he worked with Rosa King and accompanied her on a tour across half of Europe

His 1998 album A Body of Work was his first new US studio release since Walk a Fine Line in 1983; vocalists and performers included Celine Dion, Kenny G, Patti LaBelle, and Skyler Jett. The album included a new version of "Hold Me 'Til the Morning Comes", once again performed with Peter Cetera. In 2005, his album of big-band arrangements of contemporary standards, Rock Swings, provided a mainstream comeback of sorts that saw him awarded a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in Toronto  .
