The names Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo and the Original Ballet Russe (using the singular) refer to companies that formed after Diaghilev's death in 1929. History and productions. In 1909, Diaghilev presented his first Paris "Saison Russe" devoted exclusively to ballet (although the company did not use the name "Ballets Russes" until the following year). Most of this original company were resident performers at the Imperial Ballet of Saint Petersburg, hired by Diaghilev to perform in Paris during the Imperial Ballet's summer holidays. Diaghilev hired the young Stravinsky at a time when he was virtually unknown to compose the music for The Firebird, after the composer Anatoly Lyadov proved unreliable, and this was instrumental in launching Stravinsky's career in Europe and the United States of America. Stravinsky's early ballet scores were the subject of much discussion.

Scottish Ballet is creating a new version of the 1911 piece Petrushka, the Royal and the English National Ballet are presenting programmes of Diaghilev repertory, and London's Sadler's Wells has commissioned four works, inspired by the Ballets Russes. It's an unprecedented act of homage, and fitting for the company that changed ballet from decorative entertainment to an avant-garde art form. The Ballets Russes lasted just 20 years, disbanding after the death of Diaghilev. But between 1909 and 1929, it staged more than 50 courageous new works. These days, if you approach any major artist about a project, they'll say, 'OK, I could do that in about 2013. Back then, the world was so much smaller. But Diaghilev was still the one who came along and made the magic.

Ballet égyptien, Op. 12 (1875), is Alexandre Luigini's best-known composition and the only one of his works in the standard repertoire. It was dedicated to Jules Pasdeloup. The ballet consists of eight movements, from which two different concert suites have been extracted. The first suite is the better known. It originally gained prominence when it was included in Act II of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Aida for a performance in Lyon in 1886

This revolutionary artist intoxicated Paris, driving the French mad about Russian culture. Fashion a la russe became all the rage in large part thanks to Bakst’s stage decorations and costumes. The artist earned great fame with his extraordinary fairy tale scenery for Ballets Russes’ leading productions: "Cleopatra," "Scheherazade," "Carnival," and "Narcissus.
