Sinatra (left) on the Armed Forces Radio in 1944. Sinatra did not serve in the military during World War II. On December 11, 1943, he was officially classified 4-F ("Registrant not acceptable for military service") by his draft board because of a perforated eardrum. Sinatra's third album, Christmas Songs by Sinatra, was originally released in 1948 as a 78 rpm album set, and a 10" LP record was released two years later. When Sinatra was featured as a priest in The Miracle of the Bells, due to press negativity surrounding his alleged Mafia connections at the time, it was announced to the public.
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall’s marriage was proof that not every celebrity match has to end in a consciou. To put Bogart and Bacall’s age difference into contemporary terms, picture Ben Affleck hooking up with Lorde. Even in an era in which wily older males bedding supplicant younger starlets was as much a Hollywood cliché as some corn-fed kid from Oregon being killed storming a beach in Normandy, the Bogart-Bacall affair scandalised Tinseltown. Better still, every moment of the burgeoning chemistry had been captured on film. Always in the wee small hours when it seemed to Bogie and me that the world was ours, that we were the world. At those times, we were. Marriage was inevitable, and if anyone was still in doubt as to Bogart’s swelling sentimental heart, the nuptials settled the question in a river of salted cheeks.
However, when Davis served in the United States Army during World War II, he was confronted by strong prejudice. He later said: "Overnight the world looked different. It wasn't one color any more. In Japan, Davis appeared in television commercials for coffee, and in the United States he joined Sinatra and Martin in a radio commercial for a Chicago car dealership. On May 27–28, 1973, Davis hosted (with Monty Hall) the first annual, 20-hour Highway Safety Foundation telethon.
It's amazing that so many shows have been preserved, and for the most part sound quality is good to excellent. At worst, some programs sound as if you're listening to a scratchy old phonograph record. If you're old enough to remember a time before television, when radio was a vital part of the average family's home entertainment, you'll enjoy renewing the experience. For children of the 1950s and early '60s, it's fun discovering the roots of many of popular TV shows of the time. But if you just want to listen to some great stories, without being tied to a screen, and let your imagination run, you'll love these podcasts.

The program was broadcast on the Armed Forces Radio Network (AFRS) with a direct shortwave transmission to the troops overseas. It was not broadcast over domestic . Top performers of the day appeared, including Bing Crosby, Jack Benny, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Fred Allen, Ginger Rogers, Judy Garland and The Andrews Sisters. The first Command Performance was broadcast on March 1, 1942, almost exactly three months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It was under the aegis of the Office of War Information and its success paved the way for the creation of the Armed Forces Radio Service in May 1942. Time magazine described Command Performance as being, "the best wartime program in America".
Lauren Bacall, 19, was a former model starring in her first leading film role when she met Humphrey Bogart, 45, on the set of To Have and Have Not in 1944. Bogart was married to his third wife, actress Mayo Methot, at the time. The movie debuted on Jan. 20, 1945, and Bogart was divorced soon after. He and Bacall tied the knot on May 21, 1945 at a ceremony on Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield's farm in Lucas, Ohio. They would go on to have two children together, staying.
