John Adams admirers will probably already have a recording of his masterly dark side of LA orchestral portrait, City Noir. So the main attraction of this enjoyable St Louis Symphony album, conducted by David Robertson, is Adams’s Saxophone Concerto, composed for the virtuosic Timothy McAllister, who plays it here. Stacked with swing-era allusions, moody 4am interludes and cartwheeling acrobatics, it is unpretentious fun from start to finish.

The Saxophone Concerto is a composition for alto saxophone and orchestra by the American composer John Adams. The work was jointly commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo Foundation. It was given its world premiere in Sydney, Australia on August 22, 2013 by the saxophonist Timothy McAllister and Sydney Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Adams.

St Louis Symphony captures the composer's infectious energy, but the music itself doesn't provide the depth that is promised, writes Andrew Clements. But Doctor Atomic Symphony emerged in 2007 from the orchestral music Adams extracted from his opera, and he has said City Noir, first performed in 2009, was "in the form of a 30-minute symphony". City Noir was written for Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Most of all, it's a homage to how LA was depicted in the cinema of the 1940s and 50s, and to the film scores underpinning it. Behind the music's lazy, loping melodic lines, pulsing accompaniments and moments of fierce drama, there are echoes of the screen composers of that era, and of its jazz – especially.

In this clip, Dr. McAllister discusses the St. Louis Symphony 2014 album CITY NOIR, with Adams' City Noir and Saxophone Concerto. The album won a 2015 Grammy for Best Classical Orchestral Performance. The USO will also perform two works by composer John Adams, including his Saxophone Concerto, with saxophonist Timothy McAllister

Finally, I'm glad I heard this piece. And David Robertson impresses greatly conducting the St. But my suspicions were quickly confirmed that this can not provide anywhere near the level of enduring musical enrichment that the more famous work of the (almost) same name does, and continues to do, after more than 125 years. I can't imagine ever wanting to listen to this CD again.
