With the Independent hailing him as "the quintessential modern composer", the Austin, Texas-based musician works in a variety of idioms and domains, including film, theatre, concert halls, and more. The Difference Engine carried Reynolds into the practice of marrying sound and science while sharing the culture of inquiry central to both disciplines. Based loosely on the concerto format, the story of Charles Babbage and his invention "the difference engine" hands at the center. His desire to build this engine now gives historians a glimpse of the fervor of creation and what could have been the world's first computer. The completed concerto The Difference Engine premiered in 2010 as a 35-piece orchestral performance presented by Golden Hornet in Austin.
Graham Reynolds is the quintessential modern composer, able to turn his hand to anything from rock to ballet to movie scores to jazz. Here he presents a triple concerto inspired by Charles Babbage's invention of the computer. It opens dramatically, with frantic pizzicato and shrill bowing – evoking the speed of both Babbage's intellect and his machine's calculations – reaching a vertiginous climax in bold, cinematic style. The more contemplative second movement has echoes of Philip Glass's lyrical minimalism, while the third uses rasping, machine-like bowing beneath a lead.

Graham Reynolds: I’ve known Ellington’s work for a good portion of my life, long enough not to remember when I first encountered him consciously. I had a double album of his in high school that I listened to a lot. But when I moved to Austin I greatly reduced my jazz listening for a number of years. I don’t have an exact reason for this, but I think it has to do with rediscovering where my voice was coming from. AC: Taken as a whole, what were you going for and/or trying to accomplish with your triple concerto on The Difference Engine? The whole reminds me very much of some of your Alamo Drafthouse silent movie scores. GR: A concerto, a piece for soloist and orchestra, is a form I’ve always loved. It allows for a huge range of expression, from the intimate and personal playing of an individual, to the richness and majesty of a large group. A triple concerto then, is a piece for three soloists and orchestra, in this case we used a string orchestra

Austin, Texas-based composer Graham Reynolds’s The Difference Engine: A Triple Concerto does not waste notes getting your attention. A shriek of scraped strings launches a frantic run through the opening moments of this five-movement work, scored for violin, cello, and piano with small string chamber ensemble. According to Reynolds, the speed was a nod to Charles Babbage and his work on the first programmable computer and was inspired by the ferocious pace of both Babbage’s thinking and the calculating speed of his invention.
