Girlfriend" is a 1991 single by the American power pop musician Matthew Sweet, released as the lead single from his third album, Girlfriend. The song reached on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. In July 2017, Sweet told WXRT radio in Chicago that a friend and musician on the album, Lloyd Cole, convinced him that it was a good song worthy of the album.

Matthew Sweet's third album is a remarkable artistic breakthrough. Girlfriend was Matthew Sweet’s third album, written in 1990 following his divorce. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he said It’s funny how the album ended up showing everything I needed to feel. Everything I needed as an antidote is there. Released on October 22, 1991, Girlfriend is Sweet’s most commercially and critically successful album to date, The album peaked at on the Billboard 200 album chart and was the Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop critic’s poll best album of 1991 . The original title of the album was to be Nothing Lasts, but Weld objected to the implication. Jim Rondinelli, the engineer on the album, said It’s one of the greatest divorce records ever made.
This was Matthew Sweet's breakout single, but it nearly got binned along with the rest of the album. Born in Nebraska in 1964, Sweet attended the University of Georgia, located in the musical hotbed of Athens, Georgia, home of . In 1983, he joined a band called Oh-OK, which included Michael Stipe's sister, Linda. This led to more musical connections and a gig playing with The Golden Palominos. Columbia Records signed him and released his first album, Inside, in 1986, followed by Earth in 1989
