For their third and final album, the Cohelmec Ensemble chose to record a live performance, since it were those live shows on which the ensemble's reputation was based. Here including trumpeter Jean-François Canape, the group lost none of its subtlety in moving from studio to stage. On the contrary; the situation galvanised the musicians on to higher energy levels, without leaving behind the typically complex structures. Limited to 500 copies in a gatefold sleeve with obi. Listening to all the songs this way helped me break down the different musical periods from album to album and formulate a clearer opinion of how I perceived the band had changed over the course of their five studio releases. The six tracks from the self-titled debut are very much song oriented and not so long.

The Cohelmec Ensemble was one of the first of the second generation Free Jazz ensembles in France, and were perhaps the second (after Workshop de Lyon) to present themselves as a non-hierarchically structured collective. Their name is a composite drawn from the surnames of the four founding members: saxophonist Jean COHen, pianist Dominique ELbaz, and the MEChali brothers, bassist François and drummer Jean-Louis  . These reissues of the two eponymous LPs, originally on Saravah, released by Mahjun in 1973 & 1974 are nice. Let's cross our fingers that their direct predecessors get equal treatment.
