Lester William Polsfuss (June 9, 1915 – August 12, 2009), known as Les Paul, was an American jazz, country, and blues guitarist, songwriter, luthier, and inventor. He was one of the pioneers of the solid-body electric guitar, and his techniques served as inspiration for the Gibson Les Paul. Paul taught himself how to play guitar, and while he is mainly known for jazz and popular music, he had an early career in country music.

The man Les Paul may have passed away in August 2009, but it’s fair to say that the guitar bearing his name will be around as long as players want to make thick, tone-heavy guitar music. Join MusicRadar on its appreciation of 29 Les Paul legends. In part 1, you’ll see Jimmy Page, Freddie King, Slash and many more. Check out part 2 here Harrison played Lucy for much of ‘68 and ‘69, using it on various cuts on ‘The White Album,’ Let It Be and Abbey Road. Here he is strumming it in the video for Revolution. But the Beatle had no problem handing it back to Clapton to cut the searing guest-lead-guitar on The Beatles' While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Now check out part 2 of our Les Paul Legends feature! The guitar was intended be a sunburst Les Paul that more closely approximated ’59 Standard specs. The result, the KM model, is a nice guitar but does not come close to a ’59 reissue
Listen to albums and songs from Les Paul. Every modern guitarist and record producer should worship at Les Paul's altar. This brilliant innovator changed the course of popular music - and he had one heck of a good time doing so. An excellent jazz guitarist who jammed with the cream of the Swing and Bop crop, Paul's hollow sound was aided by his own inventions: a series of solid-bodied electric guitars that were adopted by the industry and became rock 'n' roll standard issue
