If you're one of the lucky ones to have a copy with a lyrics insert you're actually pretty unlucky. NONE of the lyrics are right. This goes for 1972 too.Okay, it was a commercial failure and is lumped in with 1972 as Ferre's worst efforts, but it's one of my favourite albums and is up there with LZ2. There, I said it!! It may look like one of those Readers Digest/bargain bucket pieces you just flip past but inside there's some of the most emotional, amazing music ever captured. You think you've heard the blues. Try all the colours of the musical rainbow. They're all here in some shape or form. Forget the 60s. This IS the 60s.I Warned YouThe New SheriffAll Right is a romp all the way through. The female singers make their 1st appearance here and we're in for a bit of a treat. High vocals usually make me wince but the engineer (heck, this band mix themselves?!) has done well to mix them and they actually leave me the good kind of raw. Where you welcome pain. Yes, they massage your soul and leave it wanting more.If you can't find or afford the album, find the single which has the 1st, title, track and this on it. This proves the long standing taboo that the b-side is better than the 'A'Orphan Blues is actually Ferre's own blues, a good blues too.Irene Goodnight even in the rockiest of forms gives my dad the UGHs. Personally it's one of the most ballsiest 6/8s out there. The lyrics don't line up with the original, heck Ferre makes apparent nonsense sound beautiful. If there was ever a song for a celebration, I'd choose Irene by Ferre as the 1st and last piece. Before your heart explodes with emotion it's over all to quickly.Warning, you're about to enter the 2nd side. The subject matter is about to get darker and the groove is about to get sexier. You sure you can handle it? Well, don't say I didn't WARN you!!I'm Alabama Bound has a weird beginning, it's like Hugo layed down his track from the off and they just fad him in. Why does it sound so hollow? The female singers really work well here too. It's probably the best opener of a side I've heard so far. The band explode every time a chorus is called. Luk's ride carries the song nicely like a train going out of control. The rhythm instruments aren't too busy but when they are the train really comes to life as we whizz towards the midnight party.Take A Whiff On Me is Ferre left alone with a guitar and one too many bottles of beer. The effect is amazing. Ferre manages to make a folk song about drugs a bloody loony romp without indulging in the subject matter. The way it leads into the next song is just magic.Seriously, Ferre at his rawest is better than Dylan. On My Dying Bed is my favourite song on the album. 5th Ball Gang groove along impossibly well and Ferre spits his most dark lyrics yet. Unfortunately it prematurely fades out at the end. One can only imagine what the rest sounds like. I think it the equipment exploded at the end. The SHEER AWESOMENESS gets too much for me to bear. And it's always fresh. The constantly present morgue of music doesn't touch Dying Bed. And it slowly creeps towards your head. Then you're hooked, you want more Dying Bed.Midnight Special starts off quite boringly but as the song gathers speed so does the emotion in the session. When the band gets to the verses where they all join in it gives me a chill every time.Smoozy Punky Baby is the best song on the album. 5thBG conjure up an irresistibly dark groove on which Ferre + Toet blast their melodies. All performances are top notch. You wonder if this was at the end of the sessions. Why is that equipment still working?!! Maybe it's been resurrected. They get to the end of the song and you're wondering why they stopped. The session's over? Ferre's too drunk? 5thBG are getting too tired? You flip the LP back over and the journey starts again. We WARNED you it was too good to bear.
