99 Songs of Revolution: Vol. 1 is the fourth studio album by the American ska punk band Streetlight Manifesto, released March 16, 2010. It is part of a multi-album cover songs project by several associated acts including Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution. 99 Songs of Revolution was originally thought to be only a Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution release, as stated in the liner notes for their debut 2001 EP, A Call to Arms.
This album does have that classic DK sound, but most of the songs sound exactly the same here. Dead Kennedys - Bedtime For Democracy. The album begins with the insane opener Take This Job And Shove It. It's just a punk romp. All you need to hear is 30 seconds of the song and you'll know the rest. It's super repetitive. But hey, this is a b-sides so expect a lot of this. Hop With The Jetset is the next track and this one has some substance.
There is a dichotomy that exists among Streetlight Manifesto. While the ska-punk septet include four horns that are often blaring in opposite directions, their arrangements are meticulously crafted and intentional. Sure, a bit of the oddness is just the nature of the project as this isn't your standard cover album. When all is said and done, 99SOR will be eight full-length records – two from Streetlight, two from acoustic side project Bandits Of The Acoustic Revolution and "two each from two other SM related groups.
Streetlight Manifesto’s first recording was a four-track EP, that featured the songs Everything Went Numb, Point/Counterpoint, The Saddest Song and We Are the Few. All of these songs were re-recorded for their full-length studio album, which was released under Victory Records on August 26th 2003. The album earned critical acclaim, with critics paying attention to the band’s well-written lyrics and powerful energy. It wasn’t until three years later that they released their sophomore studio album called Keasbey Nights, on March 7th 2006
Streetlight Manifesto ended 2005 by touring alongside the Tossers on the brief (and appropriately titled) Please Stop Robbing Us Tour. Keasbey Nights, a re-recorded version of the 1998 Catch-22 album, was released in March 2006, and the band spent the summer opening for Reel Big Fish and MxPx on a national co-headlining tour. The group continued to tour with Reel Big Fish for much of the remaining year, as well as a large chunk of 2007. Frequent concert dates didn't preclude Streetlight Manifesto from returning to the studio, however, and the band released the full-length album Somewhere.
Tomas Kalnoky (born December 24, 1980) is a Czech-born American musician. He is the lead singer/guitarist and songwriter of the bands Streetlight Manifesto and Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, and goes by the pseudonym Toh Kay as a solo performer.
