This turned out to be a representative move in more ways than one, though, in that the music was entirely instrumental; presumably Kilbey's intent was for people to read along while listening. But regardless of the contents surrounding the album itself, Earthed is an enjoyable listen, low-key and often quite rewarding. If the full-band touch of the Church in wordless mode is missing (certainly the unremarkable drum programming more often hurts rather than helps), those who appreciate Kilbey's way with obliquely haunting melodies will find much to love.

Steve Kilbey's instrumental CDs are very mellow, satiating and pleasant offerings. Earthed" is his seminal instrumental CD and I really enjoyed the environmental themes and atmospheric music. The "Gilt Trip" CDs are also musical gems that are a bit more ambient and elaborate than "Earthed". A real bonus of Earthed is the booklet of essays by Kilbey. In addition to being an exemplary composer and vocalist, Steve Kilbey is also a sterling painter, writer, blogger and prose poet. I bought the Ryko version of this album back in the late 1980s. The music is all instrumental, predominantly monophonic keyboards. Although the album was recorded by Steve Kilbey at home using a 4 track machine the quality is surprisingly good. I still listen to the CD either alone or with the poetry book in hand.
