John Mayall, OBE (born 29 November 1933) is an English blues singer, guitarist, organist and songwriter, whose musical career spans over sixty years. In the 1960s, he was the founder of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, a band which has counted among its members some of the most famous blues and blues rock musicians.

Looking Back is the seventh album released by John Mayall in August 1969 by Decca Records. The album features songs by both John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and John Mayall solo work. The album reached No. 79 on the Billboard 200. Confusingly, there are two different albums with the title "Looking Back": a Decca UK release as a single album (SKL 5010) and a Decca Germany (issued by TELDEC) release as a double album (DS 3104/1-2). Later issues on CD would use the Deram label.

John Mayall: Exactly, yes. There were no indications of making a personnel change at that time. been in the can for a little while. It always seems that I record these albums at a fast pace but they’re put to the test when it comes to getting them released. Will your next album be with the trio? JM: It’s too soon to be talking about it but we’ve been having so much fun and creative output when we’ve been doing our live shows as a trio that it’d be the best thing to do, toward the end of the year. JM: With John Lee Hooker, he was very easygoing and there was no problem at all. He’d travel around in the van with us for a month, up and down the country. Sonny Boy, I didn’t play very many gigs with him, a specific tour, but he was one of my idols and we did have some time together. When he wanted some new harmonicas from Hohner, he and I drove out there in the taxi, so I got to have a one-on-one with him.

John Mayall's debut album, recorded live in December 1964, is a little unjustly overlooked, as it was recorded shortly before the first of the famous guitarists schooled in the Bluesbreakers (Eric Clapton) joined the band. With Roger Dean on guitar (and the rhythm section who'd play on the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton album, bassist John McVie and drummer Hughie Flint), it has more of a rock/R&B feel, rather like the early Rolling Stones, than the purer bluesier material Mayall would usually stick to in his subsequent recordings. In the 1960s, he was the founder of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, a band which has counted among its members some of the most famous blues and blues rock musicians
