Klezmer clarinetist Dave Tarras may not have taught Benny Goodman to swing, but his breakthrough style had a profound effect on American pop. Bandmate Ziggy Elman brought the Yiddish influence on jazz out into the open via Goodman's "And the Angels Sing," and where would the Andrew Sisters be without "Bay mir bistu sheyn?" Highly recommended.

Klezmer (Yiddish: כליזמר or קלעזמער (klezmer), p. כליזמרים (klezmorim) – instruments of music) is a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. Played by professional musicians called klezmorim in ensembles known as kapelye, the genre originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental display pieces for weddings and other celebrations. In the United States the genre evolved considerably as Yiddish-speaking Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, who arrived between 1880 and 1924, came into contact with American jazz. Compared with most other European folk-music styles, little is known about the history of klezmer music, and much of what is said about it remains uncertain Contents.

Dovid Tarraschuk (1897–1989), better known as David Tarras, was one of the best respected and most famous klezmer musicians in America, widely known for graceful, soaring music with its powerful evocation of shtetl life. Tarras came from the small town of Ternovka, near the Ukrainian city of Uman. He was exposed to klezmer music early in his childhood because his father was a klezmer trombonist and batkhn. Tarras played for a while in his father's family kapelye (band).

Dave Tarras: "Dovidl Bazetst di Kale" (1928) from Dave Tarras: Yiddish-American Klezmer Music // 1925-1956. Clarinetist Dave Tarras showed up to New York in 1923. With a slickness and virtuosic musicality that was irresistible to listeners, he quickly became the most popular, in demand and busiest working Klezmer clarinetist. This is one of Tarras' first recordings. In 1956 Tarras was co-featured on the monumental album Tanz! on Epic Records. It was the brainchild of his son in-law, another great clarinetist, Sam Musiker, who was best known as a soloist with Sarah Vaughan and the Gene Krupa Orchestra. I'm writing this as I gear up to release Kosher Style, my first studio album of all brand new Klezmer music in over a decade! Going through a century's worth of recorded music has reminded me of how vast my influences are.
