The ballet was later adapted to a Beijing opera in 1964, and as with the ballet itself, both stage and film versions were produced. It is one of the so-called eight model plays, the only plays, ballets and operas permitted in China during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976)

Like many national ballet companies, the National Ballet of China grew from foreign imports taking root in native soil. It was founded on the last day of 1959 as the Experimental Ballet Company of the Beijing Dance School, a school which had itself been founded only in 1954. Two principal figures influenced both school and company. The repertory dwindled to just two sanctioned ballets – The Red Detachment of Women and The White-Haired Girl – and the company travelled in a punishing schedule around the country, often on foot and carrying their own baggage. Following the arrest of Madame Mao 10 years later, the company began to reform and grow as China began to open its cultural and economic doors.

In China revolutionary opera refers to the model operas (Chinese: 樣板戲; Chinese: 样板戏; pinyin: yàngbǎnxì) planned and engineered during the Cultural Revolution by Jiang Qing, the wife of Chairman Mao Zedong. They were considered revolutionary and modern in terms of thematic and musical features when compared with traditional operas . And the ballet that still shows a considerable vitality today is the Red Detachment of Women, the one that was presented to Richard Nixon, President of the United States, who visited China in 1972, seven years before the normalization of the Sino-US relationship. This performance was reenacted in a slightly surreal form in John Adams's opera Nixon in China (1985–87).
Performed by China's prestigious Central Ballet Troupe, the Red Detachment of Women won high acclaim from critics and the local theater-goers at a recent performance at the Canal Theater in Madrid, Spain. The Red Detachment of Women was the opening show at the 33rd Madrid International Dance Festival. During the gathering of top ballet companies from across the world, the Chinese classic held its own with its distinctive charm. According to the company's director Feng Ying, the production is unique in how it embodies Chinese spirit in a Western art form
