Yé-yé (French pronunciation: ) was a style of pop music that emerged from Southern Europe in the early 1960s. The term "yé-yé" was derived from the English term "yeah! yeah!", popularized by British beat music bands such as the Beatles. The style expanded worldwide, due to the success of figures such as the French singer-songwriters Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy. Yé-yé was a particular form of counterculture, deriving most of its inspiration from UK or American rock and roll.

This was right around the time that the yé-yé movement was taking place in France. Hardy was considered to be the leading figure of this movement because she was leading the French music scene at the time.
In what are known as the yé-yé years (after the ‘yeah yeahs’ popular in rock ‘n’ roll), girl singers earned the appellation ‘the yé-yés’. The derivative nature of their music meant that many failed to earn the respect they deserved. Until now, that is. Sylvie Vartan and Sheila were two of the most successful of the yé-yés, enjoying hit after hit throughout the 1960s, often with covers of Anglo-Saxon songs, particularly in the early years. But not all yé-yés relied on British or American material.
