Each member of the band is supremely talented and few other bands can claim having so much talent in one group. Faith No More displayed an extraordinary ability to tackle many different musical styles. In later albums they honed their talent even further and entered new areas of ability. Epic" is a sterling example of when metal meets rap and actually works. It is no wonder it went into heavy rotation on MTV. "Surprise! You're Dead!"

His insane, wide-ranging musical interests would have to wait for the next album for their proper integration, but the band already showed enough of that to make it an inspired combination. Bottum, in particular, remains the wild card, coloring Jim Martin's nuclear-strength riffs and the Bill Gould/Mike Bordin rhythm slams with everything from quirky hooks to pristine synth sheen.

In early 1990, Faith No More was still trying to break out of cult status; the band’s third album, The Real Thing, released in June 1989, had already disappeared from the Billboard charts. But things started to change in late February. After the band received an attention-getting Grammy nomination for Best Heavy Metal Performance, The Real Thing reentered the charts at Number 188. Then, in March, when MTV began airing the arty video for the single Epic, The Real Thing began to move steadily. In late July, the album cracked the Top Twenty and was certified gold.

The Real Thing has more in common with FNMs earlier two albums We Care a Lot and Introduce Yourself then any of the bands later work, though Patton's vocal delivery and lyrical content sometimes push it into strange realms. Genrewise it dwells primarily in the realms of early funk metal, though with nods to the inspirations of thrash (Surprise! You're Dead!), classical (Woodpecker from Mars), and the closer to the album which is an odd foray into lounge music (The Edge of The World).
