Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varèse (French: ; also spelled Edgar Varèse; December 22, 1883 – November 6, 1965) was a French-born composer who spent the greater part of his career in the United States. He coined the term "organized sound" in reference to his own musical aesthetic. Varèse's conception of music reflected his vision of "sound as living matter" and of "musical space as open rather than bounded".

Pacific 231. Album A Young Person's Guide to the Avant-Garde (Music and Modernism in the 20th Century). Perhaps Honegger’s best-known work, this orchestral symphonic movement depicts a steam locomotive on its journey. The title is redundant for railroad workers, as Pacific and 231 described the same type of vehicle, with the wheels grouped into two (pilot wheels), three (driving wheels), and one (trailing wheel) per side. My aim in Pacific 231 was not to imitate the noises of a locomotive, but to translate a visual impression and physical enjoyment into a musical construction. The point of departure is objective contemplation, the quiet breathing of the engine at rest, the effort of starting, the gradual acceleration until it reaches a lyric pace, and finally the drama of a 300-ton train hurtling through the dead of night at a mile a minute.
