It’s been a big year for Breach, . Almost too big, in fact. His track ‘Jack’ hasn’t just blown up on dancefloors across the globe: it’s laid waste to them. In the process, ‘Jack’ got to Number 9 in the UK charts. Not bad considering Westbeech has always seen Breach as an underground thing. Take Breach’s DJ Kicks mix, for example. If all you know about Breach is ‘Jack’, you’re in for a surprise. Likewise, if you’re familiar with Westbeech as a vocalist-both solo (see his 2007 debut album ‘Welcome To The Best Years Of Your Life’ for Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label) and as a guest (he’s appeared on records by Deetron, Jazzanova and Jose James)-you might have to have a bit of a reappraisal. It’s closest in spirit to his 2011 album for New York label Strictly Rhythm, ‘There’s More To Life Than This’. The set of techno and house on offer here is deep.
DJ-Kicks (styled DJ-KiCKS on all cover artwork) is a series of DJ mix albums, mixed by various artists for the independent record label !K7 Records. DJ-Kicks started out in 1993 as a compilation of electronic DJ -style mixes in the techno or house genres, with the then-novel twist of being targeted to a home listening audience.
Breach - DJ-Kicks With deep house, drum & bass and acid jazz among the genres in which he's dabbled, you could say that Ben Westbeech is creatively restless. You might also say he's quick to jump on passing bandwagons, but that wouldn't really be fair. His two solo albums to date-the white boy soul of 2007's Welcome To The Best Years Of Your Life and the vocal house of 2011's Theres More To Life Than This-weren't classics, but they had a proficiency and conviction that showed he was more than just a trend-hopper. Westbeech claims to have been DJing since he was 12 years old, and his DJ-Kicks makes that easy to believe. The mix is free of fussy tricks but has drops in all the right places. From the Balearic intro of Wire People's "Triangle Vision" to the final fade-out of Sabre's low-lit "Nightdrive To Bolland," it shows that Westbeech's heart really does belong to house music.
