Any way you want it (as the first single goes), the Orange Humble Band’s second album, part of which is subtitled A Southern American small music revue, actually manages to improve on Assorted Creams, their first release from four years previous, thanks to a more focused approach, consistently great songwriting, an even more immaculate production, and once again a stellar cast which. includes Don Dixon, Bobby Sutliff, Jim Dickinson, and Spooner Oldham, in addition to the core of Ken Stringfellow, Mitch Easter, humble band leader Darryl Mather, and new drummer Jody Stephens.

Orange Humble Band If That’s What You Want ‘Depressing Beauty’. Citadel, 2015 Notes: Following the demise of his acclaimed Aussie group Someloves, Darryl Mather helped form The Orange Humble Band in 1994. Soon after they released Assorted Cream. nd gave the low-key super group (Ken Stringfellow of The Posies and Big Star drummer Jody Stephens contributed heavily while REM collaborator Mitch Easter co-produced) an identity all their own.

Spanning two continents, and boasting a lineup composed of former/ongoing mainstays from the Posies (Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer), Big Star (Jody Stephens), The Lime Spiders and Someloves (Darryl Mather) and Mitch Easter among others, The Orange Humble Band is nothing short of a dream proposition, not only for the hipster indie pop cognoscenti, but for an average. Joe like yours truly.

Orange Humble Band’s new album Depressing Beauty Photograph: supplied. Ain’t Tougher Than Me, subtitled Ode to the King of New York, is a tribute to Lou Reed, though it sounds more like Bob Dylan with Television as his backing band. Despite its provenance, it was written and recorded before Reed died. But if Assorted Creams concentrated on the pop side, Depressing Beauty, like its predecessor Humblin’ Across America, is a many splendoured thing. Oughta Feel Ashamed is the kind of country rock the Rolling Stones were doing on Exile On Main St, while Emma Amanda is a 60s-style folk song. With The Orange Humble Band, it’s barely enough.

The band's second album, Humblin’ (Across America) appeared in 2001, with work commencing on it eighteen months earlier. The line-up of Mather, Bautovich, Easter and Stringfellow were joined by Jody Stephens (Big Star, Golden Smog) on drums and Jamie Hoover (The Spongetones) on bass guitar. Spooner Oldham (Dan Penn, Aretha Franklin, Neil Young), and Jim Dickinson provided organ and piano on several tracks. The Orange Humble Band recorded their third album in October 2012 at Ardent Studios in Memphis, which was produced by Easter. The album, Depressing Beauty, was released on 22 May 2015 via Citadel Records.
