Percy Mayfield (August 12, 1920 – August 11, 1984) was an American rhythm-and-blues singer with a smooth vocal style. He was also a songwriter, known for the songs "Please Send Me Someone to Love" and "Hit the Road Jack". Mayfield was born in Minden, Louisiana, the seat of Webster Parish, in the northwestern part of the state. As a youth, he had a talent for poetry, which led him to songwriting and singing.
Album Percy Mayfield: Poet of the Blues. River’s Invitation Lyrics. I've been all across the country And I've stayed in every town Because I'm trying to find my baby But no one has seen her around And you know which way I'm headed If my baby can't be found

The River's Invitation. Album: Poet of the Blues, 1990. Brother Ray has his hands all over The Poet Of The Blues' re-recording of his 1952 classic, including replacing the original Maxwell Davis sax break with a funky little piano solo all his own. Superb. The Best of Percy Mayfield.
