João Gilberto is a bossa nova album by João Gilberto, originally released in Brazil as a vinyl LP in 1973 and reissued on CD in 1988. João Gilberto released another album named João Gilberto in 1961, as well as several EPs with only his name as title. The minimal instrumentation – just Gilberto's guitar and voice, plus Sonny Carr's very sparse percussion – and the relentless beat give the album a hypnotic feel. The album's sound engineer was famous electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos
João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira, known as João Gilberto (Portuguese: ; June 10, 1931), is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He created the musical genre of bossa nova in the late 1950s. João Gilberto was born in Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil. From early on, music became an essential part of his life. When he was 14, his grandfather bought him his first guitar. During high school, João teamed up with some of his classmates to form a small band.

A Tribute to the life and music of João Gilberto, Un tributo a la vida y música de João Gilberto See all.
Dig the insistent way in which "Falsa Baiana" and Gilberto Gil's marathon rhythm machine "Eu Vim Da Bahia" ride the waves of the bossa nova groove, or how Gilberto delivers one of the best renditions of Jobim's "Aguas de Marco" - quietly relentless and to-the-point. Three of the tracks eschew words altogether - gentle syllables and/or Gilberto's insistent guitar tell the entire story - and the final selection, "Izaura," belatedly adds a female voice (Miucha) in the left speaker.
The album João Gilberto released in 1970 is the same version as João Gilberto en Mexico in the same year but by different record companies. Live in Montreux from 1987 is the same version as the one released in 1986. The version in 1986 was released in Brasil whereas the 1987 one was released in USA.
