Ella Fitzgerald's Songs in a Mellow Mood finds the singer in the ideal and intimate company of pianist Ellis Larkins. A precursor to her equally stunning Gershwin set with the pianist, this 12-track set includes such first-tier standards as "Imagination," "You Leave Me Breathless," and "Until the Real Thing Comes Along. Presaging her masterful series of songbook recordings, Fitzgerald is equally at home with Gershwin, Porter, and Rodgers & Hammerstein, never faltering while she balances vocal power and interpretive nuances.
Songs In A Mellow Mood is yet another outstanding album from The First Lady Of Song, Miss Ella Fitzgerald. Ella was one of the two or three best female singers of the twentieth century; and it's even fair to say that she may well have been one of the best female singers of all time. Ella possessed the rare ability to infuse a ballad or just about any other type of song with so much passion that it became both instantly memorable and stunningly beautiful. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and the artwork is very pretty. This CD may cost you more money than some of her other. That's it. Ellis had magic golden fingers.

Ella Sings Gershwin is a 1950 studio album by Ella Fitzgerald, accompanied by the pianist Ellis Larkins. Issued on DL5300 on the Decca label, this was Fitzgerald's first album. Originally on 10" vinyl, which preceded album releases on 12" vinyl, it featured eight tracks. The complete album was combined with Fitzgerald's 1954 album Songs in a Mellow Mood and re-issued on CD in 1994 by MCA Records on the GRP Jazz label under the title Pure Ella.
Ella's most famous live album. While her unforgettable memory lapse on "Mack the Knife" remains a classic moment, the balance of the CD more than holds it own. Fitzgerald propels the swingers forward with irresistible force and caresses several beautiful ballads with her inimitable voice. Capping off the evening: An improvisational tour de force on "How High the Moon. Ella at Juan-Les Pins (1964). The original LP culled songs from two concerts Ella gave on the French Riviera. This CD reissues the two now-legendary voice and piano EP's Fitzgerald made with Ellis Larkins, Ella Sings Gershwin (1950) and Songs in a Mellow Mood (1954). These recordings are perhaps the most effective rebuttal to the charge that Fitzgerald did not care about the meaning of lyrics. Someone to Watch Over Me" remains the only version of this extraordinary song that this world ever really needed.
