Brother Jack McDuff is one of the great Jazz organists. Known for his Soul sound, this Real Gone Jazz set combines eight of his albums to make a package that isn't just large; it's a fantastic value. That written, the first CD contains all B-list material. Indeed, "Brother Jack" is probably the weakest album in the package. McDuff's organ work sounds kitschy. He plays those wide chords that bring to mind the music played at yesteryear's roller rinks.

Let My People Go" (Richard Evans, Jack McDuff) - 3:51. Who Stole My Soul?" (Evans, Cleveland Eaton, Louis Satterfield) - 3:30. L. David Sloan" (Angela Martin, Billy Meshel) - 3:37. McDuff recorded many classic albums on Prestige including his debut solo Brother Jack in 1960, The Honeydripper (1961), with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest and guitarist Grant Green,Brother Jack Meets The Boss (1962), featuring Gene Ammons, and Screamin’ (1962).

Laurens Hammond intended his organ to play in churches and classical concert halls. Don, who loved the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ wished that the Hammond Organ could sound a little softer. After some experimentation, Don Leslie hit on an idea that would put motion into the sound of Hammond Organ. It’s why a train whistle seems to go down in pitch when a train passes you. Don took a horn speaker and made it go around in a circle. Bingo! a legend was born. The spinning horn gave the Hammond Organ what is called in the pipe.

A Change Is Gonna Come. His calls and responses with the five-man brass section on several of the tracks here comprise another highlight, but even the slow numbers, such as "No Tears," offer virtuoso playing by McDuff. The tempo and texture shifts throughout keep this record continually interesting to the listener, and the range of influences, from jazz to gospel with side trips into the blues (culminating with a seven-minute epic in the latter genre), gives a lot of great playing for everybody.
