The group was originally formed by French producers Jacques Morali, Henri Belolo and lead singer Victor Willis following the release of the debut album Village People, which targeted disco's gay audience. The group's name refers to New York City's Greenwich Village, at the time known for its large gay population.

High camp disco troupe created by producer Jacques Morali in Greenwich Village, New York - hence the name. The original line-up comprised of lead singer, Victor Willis (cop/patrolman), David "Scar" Hodo (construction worker), Felipe Rose (Indian), Randy Jones (cowboy), Glenn Hughes (leather man), Alex Briley (the GI).
Village People is the self-titled first studio album by Village People, released on July 11, 1977. Its hit song "San Francisco (You've Got Me)" was a top 50 hit in the UK, peaking at History. Village People was the creation of Jacques Morali, a French composer. He had written a few dance tunes when he was given a demo tape recorded by singer/actor Victor Willis. Morali approached Willis and told him, "I had a dream that you sang lead on my album and it went very, very big". The album was a success, and demand for live appearances soon followed.
The Village People formed in New York City, United States in 1977 and are often considered the brainchild of French dance producer/songwriter, Jacques Morali. Morali started his music career directing orchestras in Paris, but became enveloped by the 70s dance scene. During this time he organized and nurtured dance groups such as the Richie Family, but did not hit mainstream success until he founded the Village People.
