Other than four titles from 1949, this CD reissue has tenor saxophonist Harold Land's first sessions as a leader. Teamed up on the West Coast with trumpeter Rolf Ericson, pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Frank Butler, Land shows that hard bop was very much alive in Los Angeles in the late '50s. His tone is cooler and softer than it would become later on, but it was already pretty distinctive. The reissue also adds "Promised Land" to the original program. Fine straight-ahead music.

The Fox is a 1960 album by Harold Land, originally released on the Hifijazz label and reissued by Contemporary in 1969 and on CD by Original Jazz Classics in 1991. The album features trumpeter Dupree Bolton.

Harold de Vance Land (December 18, 1928 – July 27, 2001) was an American hard bop and post-bop tenor saxophonist. Land developed his hard bop playing with the Max Roach/Clifford Brown band into a personal, modern style; often rivalling Clifford Brown's instrumental ability with his own inventive and whimsical solos. His tone was strong and emotional, yet hinted at a certain introspective fragility.

The distinctive tenor saxophonist Harold Land(1928-2001) recorded this excellent quintet session in Los Angeles on January 13/14, 1958 with Swedish trumpeter Rolf Ericson and a superb rhythm section of pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Leroy Vinnegar & drummer Frank Butler. The eight memorable tracks include four originals from Land, one each from Carl Perkins & Elmo Hope(who collaborated with Land on the arrangements) plus two standards  . Format: Audio CDVerified Purchase.
