Octave is the ninth album by The Moody Blues, released in 1978, and their first release after a substantial hiatus following the success of the best-selling Seventh Sojourn in 1972. The album proved to be the last for the group with keyboardist Mike Pinder, who departed during the album's sessions, and declined an offer to tour with the group. Pinder had just started a new family in California, and found that he was not getting along with his bandmates as he had before

The Moody Blues are an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1964, initially consisting of keyboardist Mike Pinder, t Ray Thomas, guitarist Denny Laine, drummer Graeme Edge, and bassist Clint Warwick. The group came to prominence playing rhythm and blues music. They made some changes in musicians but settled on a line-up of Pinder, Thomas, Edge, guitarist Justin Hayward, and bassist John Lodge, who stayed together for most of the band's "classic era" into the early 1970s.

The Moody Blues' resumed work together after a four-year hiatus and delivered Octave in 1978, which quickly became a hit but has also proved to be a very problematic album. Picking up where he left off on Seventh Sojourn, bassist/singer John Lodge generated a hit single (and also a solid album opener) with the surprisingly edgy (for this band) rocker "Steppin' in a Slide Zone

Moody Blues - Octave (UK 1978 Gatefold) - Vinyl LP Album Record. I'm not entirely sure why THE MOODY BLUES thought they ought to make this album. The late seventies were dominated by punk and disco, and the AOR of the 1980s, which they exploited with a vengeance, had not yet arrived. I do know they were not happy with the result, and neither am I.

Pinder had just started a new family in California, and found that he was not getting along with his bandmates as he had before  . For the bonus tracks, I was overjoyed to find that there were previously unreleased live versions of some of the tracks from "Octave". The live performance of "Slide Zone" sounds unusual when compared to the studio version, but it still sounds amazing.

Octave, the Moody Blues' eighth concept album, first released in 1978. Although not as comprehensively filled with stunning musical masterpieces as some of their earlier (and later) endeavours, Octave contains one of the best, if not THE best, Justin Hayward compositions of his illustrious and lengthy career, "Driftwood". Seventh Sojourn was always going to be a difficult album to follow, but this one track more than makes up for the short-comings of the remaining nine songs (if you consider them to be deficient!)
