Ars antiqua, also called ars veterum or ars vetus, is a term used by modern scholars to refer to the Medieval music of Europe during the High Middle Ages, between approximately 1170 and 1310. This covers the period of the Notre Dame school of polyphony (the use of multiple, simultaneous, independent melodic lines), and the subsequent years which saw the early development of the motet, a highly varied choral musical composition

Notes
The creative energy of the Middle Ages is vividly reflected in the polyphonic music of the 12th and 13th centuries. The long-forgotten art of the Notre Dame epoch once again comes alive in this recording of conductus and motet, which forms a perfect companion piece to the previous Lyrichord Early Music Series recording of the monumental organa of Leonin and Perotin (Notre Dame Organa, LEMS -8002). This rare performance features an exceptional vocal ensemble, including the legendary countertenor Russell Oberlin, Charles Bressler and Robert Price, tenors, baritone Gordon Myers, with Martha Blackman viol, under the direction of Saville Clarke. Includes extensive liner notes by William G. Waite.Barcode and Other Identifiers
