Something to Write Home About is the second studio album by American rock band The Get Up Kids, released on September 28, 1999. The album was produced by The Get Up Kids themselves, with co-producers Chad Blinman and Alex Brahl. Blinman also recorded and mixed the album, with Brahl assisting with additional engineering. The album was a financial success, peaking at on Billboards Heatseekers 200 albums chart in North America, and gathered a great amount of critical acclaim.
The Get Up Kids quickly point to the large record deals they turned down to "stay independent. Most labels urged the band to re-record "Don't Hate Me" from the band's debut. So the Kids "kept it real" and recorded an entire album of songs which follow the same formula, yet never reach the quasi- memorable qualities of a radio hit. Yet, a merchandise catalog falls out of Something to Write Home About upon opening. The band's decision to not sign with a major just makes them seem financially inept in addition to their musical shortcoming
Produced by Chad Blinman, Alex Brahl & The Get Up Kids. Album Something to Write Home About. Ten minutes to downtown Is ten minutes too far When my friends all say I'm crazy Maybe I'm being selfish (Maybe I'm being selfish) Maybe I'm just scared (Maybe I'm just scared) Don't be gone when I get home I need you there. If I had to explain it I wouldn't know where to start It's like you're falling in love while I just fall apart. A pointless fight when you're always right And everything will work out It works out. Sometimes, I miss you more Whenever I'm at home I've been home all summer Now, I'm leaving you alone. Pockets empty How can you tell me that everything will work out? A pointless fight when you're always right And everything will work out Everything will work out Everything will work out.
While their first album Can’t Slow Down drew (justified) criticism for hemming a little too close to the sound of punk pioneers and fellow New Jersians Lifetime, 1999’s Through Being Cool found Saves The Day coming into their own with 40 solid minutes of loser-anthem perfection, led by singer Chris Conley’s unique combination of aw shucks.
He was the engineer on On a Wire and there was another producer on it, adds Pryor. Not that I hate that record, but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to. There’s something to prove. Previous Episodes: nothing, nowhere. PVRIS The Wonder Years mewithoutYou. The band is already in the demo process and hopes to release the so-far-untitled LP next April. Like Kicker, it’ll be out on Polyvinyl Records . Which major label did they almost sign with and why did they run away from pop-punk after 1999’s Something to Write Home About? Listen to the podcast below.
Something to Write Home About. On their second album, The Get-Up Kids affirmed Vagrant Records' co-owner John Cohen's faith; to fund Something to Write Home About, he borrowed money from his parents, who mortgaged their house. The result? A DIY effort featuring lyrics about the awkward state of the group's personal and professional relationships, along with big pop punk melodies. It was enough to put the Get-Up Kids at the forefront of a movement that was about to blow up. -Daniel Kohn. 24 Hour Revenge Therapy.
The Get Up Kids’ debut, Four Minute Mile, was a charmingly unpolished yet solid pop-punk effort that was well received by the punk/emo community. It displayed some of the band’s talent for simple yet effective melodicism and lyrical incisiveness that would eventually come to fruition on Something to Write Home About; but the evolutionary step between the albums was remarkable, perhaps even comparable to the change Brand New would affect between their debut and sophomore records only a few years later.
21, 1999 After the Get Up Kids’ Four Minute Mile garnered attention in 1997, the band sprung right back with an ambitious follow-up that pushed emo-pop to the frontlines. As the soaring vocals and crestfallen lyrics smooth the edges, Nothing To Write Home About bridged the gap between the raw and melodic with just enough grit to retain its emotional intensity. Without a doubt, this album is a classic to many pop-punk/emo bands who followed. RELEASE DATE: Nov. 2, 1999 With an album cover that fully encapsulates the struggles of every awkward misfit at a party, Saves The Day’s sophomore effort, Through Being Cool, raised the bar for both pop punk and emo songwriting. While they abandoned their melodic hardcore roots, the album’s still sonically diverse, maintaining the perfect balance between aggression and composure as Chris Conley’s brutally honest lyrics cut through the mix.
