Ravel was inspired by the music of America, namely jazz and blues. The Posthumous Sonata is a frequently dissonant work. It is an early work not published until 1975. The music is superbly played by Renaud Capuçon (violin), Gautier Capuçon (cello), and Franck Braley (piano). All are graduates of the Paris Conservatory. This 2001 recording is excellent. Renaud Capuçon and Frank Braley offer the Sonata for Violin and Piano with all the tongue in cheek humor and jazz influence that Ravel embraced. Then the brothers Renaud Capuçon and Gautier Capuçon are alone for the Sonata for Violin and Cello and a better interplay of the instruments of the work could not be imagined.

Maurice Ravel composed his Violin Sonata No. 2 for violin and piano from 1923 to 1927. He was inspired by American music, namely jazz and blues. The classic blues band of . Handy exhibited the style of St. Louis blues in Paris from 1923 to 1927.

The first theme, heard without introduction, is sinuous and dreamy; the second theme, brought in after a short piano solo, is smoother, broader, and at times vaguely Oriental, while still almost passing for Fauré.
