A Positive Rage is a live album and documentary double-disc set by the Brooklyn-based rock band The Hold Steady, released on April 7, 2009 by Vagrant Records.

A Positive Rage ‎(CD). A Positive Rage ‎(17xFile, MP3, Album, 320).

The Hold Steady, the intelligent face of middle aged hedonism, are up and roaring. This is the thrust of the accompanying DVD here, which captures The Hold Steady in London and in Minneapolis in 2006. The film is not so special. But if the DVD is a patchy, disappointing affair, the live album is ferocious; timely too, as the Hold Steady may never again find themselves performing with this degree of intimacy. These are hot, sticky, bedimmed performances with Craig Finn often breaking into his trademark live rants. Listening to A Positive Rage takes me back to Upper Street, Islington, circa 1978, where I would find myself en route to the Hope and Anchor to catch a slab of wild, carefree pub rock - not terribly chic, but then neither are The Hold Steady in the scheme of things. So, gloriously, they buck all manner of trend.

If you got into Brooklyn's the Hold Steady via their 2008 album, Stay Positive, then this is for you. First, because, if you have Stay Positive, you will have found yourself musing, "Man, this band must be amazing live," and this is a live album (plus a documentary on DVD); and second, because if you have only Stay Positive, then this live set, recorded on Hallowe'en 2007, offers a handy summing-up of the band's work on their previous three.

The Hold Steady will release their first live album A Positive Rage on April 7th. In addition to a CD stocked full of tracks from the band’s earlier discography like 2004’s Almost Killed Me and 2006’s Boys & Girls In America, the package will also feature a DVD with a 53-minute documentary detailing the band’s voyage from their first-ever London concerts in 2006 to their return back to their native Minneapolis. A Positive Rage 1. Intro 2. Stuck Between Stations 3. The Swish 4. Chips Ahoy! 5. Massive Nights 6. Ask Her For Adderall 7. Barfruit Blues 8. Same Kooks 9. You Gotta Dance (With Who You Came With) 10. Lord, I’m Discouraged 11.

A Positive Rage is something of a misnomer, since hardcore fury rates low on the Steady agenda. More crucial is the band’s 3-D storytelling on muscular guitars, and Craig Finn’s traditional chat about joy in the encore. All round, it’s a tremendous run of songs from a mid-set Lord I’m Discouraged to a closing Killer Parties.

The record is titled Positive Rage and is due out April 7, 2009. Cameras follow the band as they return to the US for a 24-date tour that culminates with a performance at First Avenue in Minneapolis
