The Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 was completed in the year 1845 and is the only piano concerto written by the German Romantic composer Robert Schumann. The work was premiered in Dresden on December 4, 1845. Schumann had earlier worked on several piano concerti: he began one in E-flat major in 1828, from 1829–31 he worked on one in F major, and in 1839, he wrote one movement of a concerto in D minor. None of these works were completed. 16, composed by Edvard Grieg in 1868, was the only concerto Grieg completed. It is one of his most popular works and is among the most popular of all piano concerti. The concerto is in three movements: Allegro molto moderato (A minor). The first movement is in sonata form and is noted for the timpani roll in its first bar that leads to a dramatic piano flourish, which leads to the main theme. The Grieg A-minor Piano Concerto fares equally well in all regards. The work opens with those magificant chords, and the magic never stops until the final notes have died out. The Grieg is so familiar to most individuals that there is a danger when I listen to become distracted, but not here. Kubelik, a fine conductor who excelled in the repetoire of the late Romantics, is completely in his element, displaying sensitivity to the performer in a manner that belies his adeptness as an accompanist. This is the BPO from the mid-1960s, and while there are a few rough patches in the Schumann it never affects my enjoyment of the music. This is a minor quibble here as the piano is the real story in these two concertos
