Captain Cook Memorial Museum is a history museum in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England. The museum building, Walker's House, belonged to Captain John Walker, to whom James Cook was apprenticed in 1746. Having lodged there as an apprentice, Cook returned to visit in the winter of 1771–72 after his first voyage. The house is situated in Grape Lane on the harbour side. A plaque on the wall states that the house was built in 1688 by Moses and Susannah Dring
Captain James Cook's explorations dramatically increased European knowledge of the world. Learn more about his contributions to 18th century science. James Cook was born in 1728 in Marton, England. His father was a Scottish migrant farm worker who allowed James to apprentice on coal carrying boats at the age of eighteen. While working in the North Sea, Cook spent his free time learning math and navigation. This led to his appointment as mate.
James Cook: James Cook, British naval captain, navigator, and explorer who sailed the seaways and coasts of Canada and the Pacific Ocean.
Captain James Cook FRS (7 November 1728 – 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. He made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.
Captain Cook made the first European contact with eastern coastline of Australia and Hawaiian Islands as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. In New Zealand, Captain Cook named Hawke's Bay, Kidnapper's Bay, Mercury Bay, the "Young Nick's Head" Peninsula, Mount Egmont and Queen Charlotte's Sound. In 1774 Captain James Cook sailed between the islands around Fiji and named some islands now the Lau Province Feejee. James Cook sighted the islands and called it FeeJee despite that Dutch Explorer Abel Tasman discovered the islands first.
Captain James Cook goes down in history as one of the greatest explorers of all time. He sailed to all seven continents, and vastly increased the knowledge of the world in the late 18th century. As a respected captain and a skilled cartographer his records and voyages filled many gaps on the world maps of his day. James Cook was born in the Yorkshire village of Marton in 1728. After recording the eclipse in Tahiti, Cook then sailed on to New Zealand and the east coast of Australia, then to the East Indies, across the Indian Ocean, around the southern tip of Africa and home. He arrived back some three years later in 1771.
The mouse carried the money so dexterously, or rather so magnificently, so thoughtfully, so delicately that not even slight teeth marks impaired the beauty of the money. The young man picked up the money casually, examined it, and studied the mouse, which stood by in perfect harmony with everything. The young man moved two paces and also stood by in perfect harmony with everything.
Captain James Cook's 1779 attempted kidnapping of Kalaniʻōpuʻu, the ruling chief of the island of Hawaii and the decision to hold him in exchange for a stolen long boat (lifeboat) was the fatal error of Cook's final voyage, and ultimately led to his death. Cook's arrival in Hawaii was followed by mass migrations of Europeans and Americans to the islands that gave rise to the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii, the aboriginal monarchy of the islands, beginning in 1893.
An iconic statue of Captain James Cook was spray-painted with political slogans by vandals along with two other monuments in Sydney's Hyde Park early on Saturday morning.
