Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Renews automatically. Sample this album Artist (Sample). Karajan takes this a full one minute faster than anyone else I've discovered, except for y, who come within 10". The effect is just breathtaking, a real "Short Ride In A Fast Machine". Is it the way one should play this movement?

Wiener Philharmoniker. Herbert von Karajan conducts Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, "Pathetique" Wiener Philharmoniker. Premiered in 1893 in St. Petersburg with Tchaikovsky on the podium, the Sixth Symphony-later nicknamed Pathetique -was met with lukewarm reception before achieving success a few months later under the baton of Napravnik, barely 9 days before the death of the composer! Dedicated to his nephew, Tchaikovsky explained that he had put my whole soul into this work, and a tragic aura has remained associated with his ultimate symphonic composition

Herbert von Karajan recorded almost everything in the standard orchestral repertoire once, many works two or three times, between his 1950s recordings for EMI with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the early 1960s for Decca with the Vienna Philharmonic, and his 1960s - 1989 recordings, mostly with the Berlin Philharmonic, for Deutsche Grammophon. In this collection of Tchaikovsky's 6 Symphonies, Karajan's only recordings of Symphonies 1, 2 and 3 are represented, dating from 1979 at the end of the analog era of recording technology, just before digital recordings became the norm.
